China - chinese yuan/renminbi (CNY)
The Chinese currency yuan (CNY) is also called renminbi (RMB), the people´s currency. The yuan is divided into 10 jiao and 100 fen. Notes can be found in the following denominations; 1 jiao, 5 jiao and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan. When receiving change for your money always check that you get the right amount. It´s a known trick to give tourists notes of jiao instead of notes of yuan. Always look for the text yuan if that is what you are supposed to receive. Card payments are accepted to some extent but in the smaller shops, restaurants and cafés it might be difficult to pay by card. This applies also in the larger cities. You will find plenty of ATM´s in larger cities but keep in mind that cash withdrawals might be quite costly as the surcharges for the card issuer and the local ATM administrator can be quite high.
