Which winter destinations to the sun offer the best value for money?

As darkness and cold sweep in over Sweden, many people dream of warmer latitudes. And there's an added bonus of swapping snow for sand: the price level of many popular winter destinations is far below the Swedish one. The FOREX Winter Price Index compares the costs of common holiday expenses such as restaurant visits, taxis and activities – and the differences are great.

The cheapest of all destinations in this year's index is Hurghada in Egypt, with an index of 26. This means that a trip here can be as much as 75% cheaper than at home in Sweden. In second place is Phuket in Thailand (40), where the travel fund lasts about 60% longer.

For those looking for exotic experiences in the Atlantic, Sal in Cape Verde (50) is a gem. Here, the price level is about half of the Swedish one. The Caribbean also attracts with affordable alternatives: Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (61) and Cancún in Mexico (71), where it is 30-40% cheaper than in Sweden. Below you will find the entire index.

The Winter Travel Index 2025/26 compares the price levels at the most popular winter destinations with sun and warmth for Swedish travellers. The index shows how much cheaper or more expensive it is to live and travel on site compared to staying at home in Sweden. This helps you as a traveler to plan your travel budget and get a clearer picture of what hotels, restaurant visits, taxis and activities cost at different destinations during the winter (December to March).

Travel fund tips from FOREX:

Cash and cards

Always have a mix of cash and cards – it provides both flexibility and security.

Cash is king

In some destinations, cash is still the most common means of payment.

FOREX Credit Card

FOREX Credit Card has no currency surcharges and offers free withdrawals outside the EU/EEA – perfect for trips to e.g. Cape Verde.

Alternative currencies

On islands such as Cape Verde, or in countries where local currency is not easy to exchange in advance, the euro often serves as an alternative currency.

Payment tips

For small purchases

Always have smaller bills ready for taxis, markets and tips – especially in countries where cash is the norm.

Excursions and activities

Many are booked and paid for directly on site (e.g. snorkeling in Egypt) – expect cash to be required.

Restaurants and bars

At many destinations, you are expected to leave tips in cash, even if the bill has been paid by card.

Hotel

The actual room payment is usually by card, but local tourist tax or small fees may have to be paid in cash.

Card smart

Use the card for larger amounts – hotel, car rental, shopping – and cash for everyday expenses.

Frequently asked questions about winter destinations

Is the Canary Islands a cheaper option?

Yes – although the difference is not as dramatic as in Egypt or Thailand. Gran Canaria (85), Fuerteventura (85), Tenerife (90) and Lanzarote (95) are all below the Swedish price level, where costs are around 5-15% lower than in Sweden, which can be seen in everyday expenses such as restaurant dining or local transport. For many, it is a perfect balance between reasonable prices and shorter travel times.

Are there destinations that are more expensive than Sweden?

Yes – Dubai (101) stands out as a destination where the price level is slightly higher than at home. Here, it's less about saving money and more about experiencing luxury: skyscrapers, desert adventures, luxury hotels and spectacular shopping. For many, it is a trip worth every penny, even though it is above the index 100.

How do currencies and payments affect travel?

It's not just the destination that determines how far the money goes – how you pay also matters. In Egypt, for example, four out of five payments are still made in cash, while in Cape Verde it would be wise to include the euro as a reserve currency.

Summary: Whether you dream of snorkelling in the Red Sea, Thai street food, Caribbean beaches or the safe sun of the Canary Islands, there is something for everyone. And with the right planning of both the destination and the travel budget, winter can feel both brighter and cheaper. At FOREX, we help you maximize your travel budget.

The index is based on data from open sources (e.g. Numbeo, BudgetYourTrip, Trivago, Booking.com and GetYourGuide) and covers December 2025-March 2026. Prices are based on a basket of 3-star hotels, restaurant meals, taxis and activities. The index reflects average levels – actual costs may vary depending on travel dates, hotel standards, seasonal peaks and individual choices.
