What is the FOREX Guide for Hidden Travel Expenses – and how does it work?

Each destination receives a score between 0 and 100, where the higher the score, the greater the risk that you as a traveler will have to pay more than you expected or need cash for unexpected situations.

Interpretation of levels:

0-20 - Almost no surprises (everything is clear and transparent)

21-50 - Smaller, predictable fees

51-75 - Common additional costs - requires planning

76-100 - Many or high hidden costs - requires good cash preparedness

The guide is based on five factors that are weighed together:

  1. Tipping culture – how often and how much tipping is expected (30%)
  2. Tourist taxes and local fees – per night or per person (25%)
  3. Cash requirements – how common it is for cash to be required (20%)
  4. Service charges – surcharges on restaurants, tours and transport (15%)
  5. Card and withdrawal fees – ATM costs, currency surcharges, etc. (10%)

FOREX Expertise

Many popular holiday destinations have small but recurring extra charges such as tourist taxes, gratuities or service surcharges. It is rarely a matter of large sums – but together they become noticeable in the travel budget. Always have some cash in local currency on arrival for safety.

FOREX Tips

  • Check if tourist tax is added per night – it is often paid in cash.
  • Take out cash before the trip – the exchange rate is often better at home.
  • Read the receipt carefully – sometimes service is already included.
  • Use the FOREX Cash Index to see how much cash you need per country.
