Cuba - Cuban peso (CUP/CUC)
Two different currencies are used in Cuba: the pesos nacionales (CUP) for the local population and the pesos convertibles (CUC) for tourists. There is actually no restriction for tourists wanting to use the pesos nacionales (CUP) but as all the services provided for tourists shall be paid in pesos convertibles, using pesos nacionales might be impossible. The best option is to bring euros to Cuba and exchange them upon arrival to pesos convertibles. You can exchange your euros at the airport, at your hotel and in banks. Cuban pesos can´t be exchanged in Finland and by law it´s forbidden to take pesos out of the country. If you have pesos left when travelling back to Finland you can easily exchange them back to euros at the airport in Cuba. The most common credit cards, VISA, Euro- and Mastercard, are accepted in larger hotels and shops. Usually there is a surcharge for card payments, up to 11 %. The price level in Cuba, especially for tourists, is quite high due to the different currency for tourists. The country´s price level is approximately the same as in Finland.
